The Bay Area Community Foundation recently awarded a $7,500 grant to The Legacy Center for Community Success for its Barton Reading & Spelling Program. The grant will enable The Legacy Center to partner with Bay County’s Auburn and McAlear-Sawden elementary schools to improve the reading level of their students.

Working with The Legacy Center, the schools will identify struggling readers that could benefit from one-on-one tutoring using the structured, explicit Barton curriculum.  The goal of the program is to improve the reading skills of at least 10 more early elementary students in Bay County over the next two years.  Seven new volunteer tutors have been trained, and students began working with their tutors in January.
